History of Evolutionary theories

The theory of evolution by natural selection, first formulated in Darwin's book "On the Origin of Species", is the process by which organisms change over time as a result of changes in heritable physical or behavioral traits. Before that, Jean Baptiste de Lamarck suggested a theory called "Lamarckism" which contains the idea that an organism can pass on characteristics that it has acquired during its lifetime to its offspring.
